This brief describes CRS' THRIVE early childhood development project in Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. THRIVE is working to level the playing field for children affected by HIV through early childhood interventions. This three-year project provides 15,000 children under age 5 with a sustainable culture of care and support.

Longer-Term Impact of Faithfulness-Focused Curriculum on HIV-Positive Couples From Four Regions in Ethiopia

Catholic Relief Services evaluated a version of the Faithful House curriculum that is tailored to strengthening the relationships of couples living with HIV. This version of the curriculum was implemented in four regions of Ethiopia. The 10-month follow-up survey data strongly suggests that the workshop curriculum was successful in strengthening the relationships of couples living with HIV and in maintaining the positive attitudes and behaviors observed three months after the intervention.

Reducing Stigma Among Health Care Providers: Improving HIV Treatment and Care in North East India

To foster greater acceptance of people living with HIV, a partner of Catholic Relief Services in North East India instituted both a staff training program and complementary changes in its management approach. As a result, health staff's attitudes changed, stigma declined and the quality of care improved in treatment facilities.

Gender Responsive Programming: Helping HIV Infected and Affected Women Access Care and Support

Positive Living Center staff in North East India observed that participation in training sessions was low among HIV-positive women with young children. Subsequently, a child care service called Cradle Care was established, and training attendance increased among women in the care and support program.

Integrated HIV Services: Strengthening Health System to Maximize HIV Care and Support in North East India

Catholic Relief Services supports partners through Project LIFE AID to operate Positive Living Centers. The centers provide HIV care and support services. The initiative has expanded integrated services by combining resources with government-supported Drop-In Centers. The result is a facility with more comprehensive services for the HIV-positive communities in North East India.

Moving toward Complete Family Care: Integrating OVC Services with HIV Treatment in Haiti

CRS has been supporting a President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) antiretroviral therapy program at Bethel Clinic, operated by The Salvation Army, in the Nippes Department of Haiti since 2004. In 2006 the PEPFAR OVC program began discussing a joint OVC/ART program which would promote high quality health care for all children living with HIV-infected adults. The integration of these programs was intended to enhance CRS-Haiti’s ability to provide a continuum of care for people living with HIV and AIDS within a community setting. This fact sheet outlines the process and outcomes of integration of these programs in Haiti.

Active Listening: Youth Participation in M&E of OVC Wellbeing in Botswana

CRS Botswana and its local partner, the Catholic Vicariate of Francistown, used the OVC Wellbeing Tool (OWT) to establish a baseline and program design for their OVC activities. In 2009 the OWT was administered to assess program impact among orphaned or vulnerable youth.

Using Mobile Phones to Support OVC in Tanzania: Results of an Operations Research Study

This program aims to enhance the quality and effectiveness of CRS OVC programming. Community volunteers can input data into forms on their cell phones. This information is captured, synthesized and analyzed in a database that will be available to staff and partners, including the Tanzanian government.
